“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.” – Nikolas Tesla
What made Tesla one of the most brilliant minds to have ever graced the Earth write this quote. Tesla’s contributions both during his life as well as posthumously are undoubtedly extremely significant to the progress of humankind. A man of science – he went on to make a lot of inventions. To name a few: alternating current, Tesla coil, remote control, induction motor. We have a general notion that when someone says anything related to science, it is usually associated with something tangible, something physical. However, even Tesla, one of the greatest scientist of the world, believed that science transcends the physical world. He was an advocate of the fact that limiting science to the physical world would greatly hinder the achievements humankind could accomplish. One of his most famous quotes till date highlights this fact,
This begs a question as to what non-physical phenomena is. Non-physical phenomena encapsulates all behaviors and patterns observed throughout the universe that do not take a physical manifestation. These phenomena are intangible, commonly described using a genre of words categorized as abstract nouns. This paradigm of thought is comprised of feelings and consciousness, rather than matter and mechanics. However, this is not to say that non-physical phenomena do not affect the material world and the mechanics associated with them. So why did Tesla, a man who devoted the entirety of his life to the advancement of science associated with the physical world, say that understanding the non-physical phenomena in life would further the development of humankind by leaps and bounds?
Firstly, claiming that science is only related to the physical world would immediately create a lot of backlash from practicing psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists and other scholars, who specialize in non-physical fields as a science. Although, these schools of thoughts are not directly related to the physical world, they still have a host of implication that impact the physical. Ask anyone who is suffering from mental health issues about how psychologists and psychiatrists have enabled them to have positive, materialistic changes within their body. Another way we can describe this is through logic.
Logic is the basis for all sciences. We use logic to infer results from experiments and translate those inferences to predict or alter physical phenomena. However, logic itself is not a material science. The effect of logic can only be understood, there is no tangible form to grasp logic. However, the study of logic has paved the way for the flow of circuits in computers and electronics, which then manifest themselves in the desired physical effects that humankind craves.
Over the course of years post-Tesla, we have harnessed a lot of knowledge related to spiritualism, consciousness and the notion of inner-self and there have been significant backing from the members of the scientific community in regards to the validity of these ideas. Carl Sagan, a renowned scientist known for his work on astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology has famously stated, “There are claims in the parapsychology field which, in my opinion, deserve serious study, [one of them being] that young children sometimes report details of a previous life, which upon checking turn out to be accurate and which they could not have known about in any other way than reincarnation.”
This has also been founded by the famous work of University of Virginia psychiatrist Jim B. Tucker. In his research, Tucker examines the lives of several kids where the kids have reported remembering specific instances about their past lives and also begging to be connected with their families from past lives. Detailed explanations about Tucker’s work can be found here.
There are a host of other developments pertaining to non-physical phenomena that scientific scholars have reported as credible; with genres ranging from pre-recognition to telepathy and remote healing. The general consensus to base science as being associated with physical objects is being challenged to a greater extent these days. This can be attributed to the credibility established by scientific scholars when they speak about non-physical phenomena and their applications as science in our world today.
For instance, let’s analyze one of the applications of science related to non-physical phenomena – out of body experiences. How do we explain what is happening to us when we feel sleep paralysis or near death experiences? Explaining anything necessitates factual basis and their corresponding results and empirical evidence. This is something that non-physical scientists have been able to provide consistently. Hence, there is no denying that the notion that science requires physical objects is not true.
In spite of all these claims that state science can be related to non-physical phenomena, we still need a basis for why Tesla stated that results associated with non-physical phenomena will have a greater impact on humankind than the ones related to physical or materialistic science. We start by distinguishing between physical and non-physical science in terms of the effect they have on us. Science related to physical manifestations appeal to the five senses in our body – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Non-physical sciences however transcend the senses of the body and appeal to our consciousness and the effects said consciousness have upon our senses.
Physical science produces tangible effects – effects that can be felt, heard, tasted, smelled or seen. Non-physical science, albeit being difficult to comprehend with our senses, initiate a sense of awareness that is delineated throughout our mind, body and spirit. Tesla was one of the first people to recognize that the portrayal of self transcended the body and into the mind and spirit as well. He realized that one was much more than the body one possessed and progress in the areas of mind and spirit which associate with mindfulness and spiritualism correspondingly comprised of two-thirds of the notion of self itself.
People’s are still divided on their interpretation of non-physical science and their effects. I am not the appropriate person to pass judgement on the actuality of such said notions. However, I encourage each of you to have an open mind and explore these paradigms of thought on your own. To learn more about why Tesla encouraged humankind to pursue non-physical science, skim through this article which I found to be particularly interesting.
