Dr. Jeffrey Thompson in 2 decades of Neuroacoustics
Call him a composer, an artist, a musician or a producer, an author, inventor, educator and motivator. His bios over the internet tag him as world’s premier sound healing researcher, brainwave entrainment expert and even high-tech personal transformation innovator and futurist. Doctor Jeffrey Thompson is the founder/director of the Center for Neuroacoustic Research in Carlsbad, California. For 20 years, Dr. Thompson has been exploring the possibilities in bringing science and arts together. He has indulged himself in a process he calls brainwave entrainment where different sound frequency patterns built into musical soundtracks could entrain brainwaves and trigger numerous health benefits. Brainwave entrainment simply is a method to stimulate brain in entering a specific state. It uses pulsing sound or light or even electromagnetic fields that pulses waves speed and cause the brain waves to time themselves to the speed of the pulse used and thus changing the state of consciousness.
Sound and human consciousness are very interlinked. From premature state, we have experienced sound and these are first thing we perceive in our mother’s womb before any other physical or abstract aspects. The eardrums and skins act as the sensor for vibration. As sound travels more efficiently in water than air, the outstretched tummy becomes one quiet realm of world that transmits sound. Thus, primordial sounds can be now therapeutically used to access the aspects of consciousness and memory, even if the person is unconscious. Dr. Thompson has found certain types of sounds viz heartbeat sounds, respiratory sounds, passage of blood through vessels and even organic bodily sounds that are are deeply associated into human nervous system and these natural sounds are immediately and naturally recognized by people irrespective of their physical and cultural appearance, sexual orientation or social status.
It was 1981 since Dr. Thompson first started experimenting with sound and their effects on different parts of body. With exact sound frequencies as that of natural sounds, he helped people with chiropractic spinal and cranial adjustments that stimulated and normalized organ functions.
To be able to understand this process, Dr Thompson uses the example of a tuning fork experiment to which most of us are familiar since our school science days. He describes that every physical substance has a particular frequencies at which it will become excited to certain higher vibratory state. A fork designed to produce 440 Hz frequency can induce the vibration of a second fork of 440 Hz if it is struck and brought into the vicinity of it. Any other fork producing different frequency won’t be able to do the same. Similarly, our every tissue act a physical object, each organ will resonate to specific sound frequencies. Since our organs have unique size and mass, it also has a unique frequency and a similar approach as of a tuning fork can be performed to stimulate or induce or in his term ‘entrain’ those organs or bones or even brain tissues by using sound of similar frequency.
On his words, “My first attempts at this involved trying to do chiropractic spinal adjustments using sound. Each vertebra is a different size, density and mass, they can be resonated with the correct sound. This causes the vertebra to vibrate back into its correct position. Similarly, cranial bones and cerebrospinal fluid can be influenced with sound resonances. The brain itself is an organ with a unique size, density and mass. So I started to ask, what would the effect be of exposing the brain to its own fundamental frequency vibration pattern?”
These practices were previously used in Shamanic drumming process where the speed of that pulse of the drum beat is around 4 and 1/2 cycle per sec which is exactly that of deep theta brain wave state, which we all know as dreaming state thus taking these as reference and using this to transform the brain wave state from an awake state or beta and gradually pulling it down into deep level or dream level state without going to sleep.
With the possibility of using sound pulses as a brainwave entrainment tool, this can take brain waves from wherever or in whatever conditions they are to more relaxed and meditated state. Dr. Thompson describes that he has now a tool to orchest brainwaves and believes he can take this knowledge and combine with different research projects that equates specific brain wave activities on EEG with specific state of consciousness. With this approach, a person can identify or even go to the state of deeper meditation or flow state or expand their consciousness in learning or memory, relaxation state, creativity state and likewise. Dr. Jeffrey Thompson brings a great tool to orchestrate things that we weren’t able to do or even think beforehand by letting people go through transformational inner experiences.
